Breeders' Cup Marathon

By: SimonSkinner

The Breeders' Cup Marathon is a 1 ½ mile race for three year olds and up. The race features a purse of $500,000. This race has the smallest purse of all of the Breeders' Cup races. With the length of 1 ½ mile, the race is considered to be a marathon at this distance and tests the abilities of the horses who compete in it.

This race is new to the Breeders' Cup in 2008 and will make its debut at Santa Anita Park. Due to the technical requirements for a race to become a graded stakes race, it is not eligible for stakes status until after its first two runnings.

The Breeders' Cup Marathon is a long race that few racehorses ever encounter. Those horses that have encountered it in the past tend to be only those who have competed in races such as the Belmont Stakes. In order to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Marathon, horses will have to race in a qualifying race. The Turfway Park Fall Championship is a Grade III race that has been named one of the fifty-seven Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" races. By winning in this race, the winner is guaranteed a spot in the Breeders' Cup Marathon. Several other races have been established as automatic berths into various other Breeders' Cup races for 2008 as well.

The Turfway Park Fall Championship has been chosen to be the challenge win for the Marathon due to the race's distance being increased from one mile to one and a half miles. The Turfway Park Fall Championship will retain its Grade III status with a purse of $100,000. The race is one that rewards horses that have been bred for stamina, as will the Breeders' Cup Marathon. The Turfway Park Fall Championship opens the racing season for Turfway Park's fall meet.

The Breeders' Cup Marathon is a weight for age race that is designated for high-quality stakes races. The race is to be held on dirt, however, with the inaugural race being held at Santa Anita in October 2008, the race will most likely be held on a synthetic Cushion Track that is scheduled to be installed at Santa Anita prior to the Breeders' Cup races. This will be the first time the Breeders' Cup has been held on a synthetic track.
