Creating a Proper Feline Diet

By: Shabi Guptha

If you have a cat, you are going to want to provide them with a proper feline diet. Far too many owners today just feed them overly processed foods that are full of additives and harmful byproducts, and so why would you want to feed these to your cat? If you want to design a healthy feline diet for your pet, here are a few tips that you are going to need to keep in mind.

Carbohydrates

Just as you would with your own diet, when you are planning a feline diet, whether you are going for a feline kidney diet or not, you need to think about carbohydrates. Cats, unlike most mammals, have no carbohydrate-digesting enzyme called Amylase in their saliva. Cats are natural carnivores so you need to make sure that they are getting enough meat in their diet.

However, cats cannot handle large carbohydrate loads efficiently, as after a meal rich in carbohydrates the feline’s blood level of glucose tends to stay higher than normal for long periods of time. Therefore, you need to break the carbs up and only give them small amounts of carbohydrates at a time.

Protein

Protein is also essential for a proper feline kidney diet. You need to feed your cat a diet with high percentages of protein and fat and low percentage of carbohydrates if you expect them to maintain an optimum body weight and a proper state of nutrition.

Treats

We all love to give our cats treats, but this is one of the biggest problems associated with cat obesity. You really need to be careful as to how often you are giving your cat treats and what you are rewarding them for. Keep in mind that most treats for cats have very high levels of carbohydrates and lots of flavor enhancers.

If you really want to get the best results you should speak to your veterinarian about creating a feline kidney diet and they will take a look at your cat and determine whether or not there are any particular health problems they need to be concerned with. They will then be able to work together as a team with you to come up with the perfect diet plan for them.

This diet plan will not only help them to lose the weight they are dealing with now, but just as importantly help keep it off in the future. If you want your cat to live as long and healthy a life as possible, creating a proper diet for them is critical.
