Home Remedies for Coughs

By: Jeff Austin

That little tickle in the back of your throat that causes you to cough is just plain irritating, and it isn't very pleasant for those you must associate with, either.

There are a multitude of causes for a cough. Sometimes a cough can be just simply the body's response to an allergen that has entered the system.

A cough can be caused by a post-nasal drip, or it can be yet another symptom of a cold or the flu. Whatever the cause of a cough is, however, the main objective of the cougher is get rid of it.

Of course, drug store shelves are full of cough lozenges that are designed to help stop coughing.

Many of these products are very good and very effective. If you choose to use one, just be sure that it is one that contains zinc. The zinc will help in a lot of ways other than just stopping that hacking little cough.

Herbal cough lozenges can be purchased at many health food stores and herbal supplement stores.

An old home remedy for coughs that my grandmother passed down to me that is very effective and better than anything that is available on the market is a mixture of equal parts of honey, lemon juice, and whiskey taken one teaspoonful at a time every two to three hours.

The idea is not to drink the whiskey, but to stop the cough. The small amount of whiskey that will be ingested isn't enough to hurt or to intoxicate but it is enough to soothe the throat and quiet the cough.

Garlic is one of the herbs that are used for treating so many different human ailments.

Three or four peeled cloves of garlic placed in a broth, sealed well, and stored in a dark closet for four weeks will produce a liquid that will soothe scratchy throats and stop coughing when just a few drops at a time are placed on the tongue.
