How to Read Analytics Why do you need to be able to read analytics? Let us say you finally worked through the painful process of designing your website and filling it with brilliant content. Your web programmer added analytics to your website so you can keep track of traffic, but you do not know how to analyze them. Conversion rates, bounce rates, exit pages vs. out clicks—it can be confusing. However, it is not hard to read analytics once you know how, and you can gain a lot of good information from them. When you read analytics, you can gain a lot of insight to your customers and how they are using your website. You can use this information to determine whether you need to improve the navigation of your site to help customers find the pages you want them to find. If you have affiliate links on your website, the analytics analysis will tell you how many people are posting on those links so you can determine whether they are of value or you presented them well. Reading your analytics can also tell you where your traffic is coming from so you know which advertising methods are working for you and which are not and what keywords people are using to find you. Analytics Analysis does not have to be Anathema There are many different ways to measure the performance of your website through analytics analysis. When you read analytics, it is important to keep your goals in mind. If the pages with the highest traffic are not the ones that will get you sales, you may not be focusing your web design efforts in the right area. If most of your customers exit via one page, it may mean that page is poorly designed, driving them away—or it might be designed to send visitors to another website or it is a natural page for them to end their visit on. Having a lot of page views on your website is not necessarily a good thing—if your site is so poorly designed that your customers have to click on page after page to find what they want, you have not met your goal of providing a good service to your website visitors. One valuable piece of analytics is the conversion rate. The conversion rate tells you how many of your visitors performed an action you might find desirable, whether it is purchasing a product, signing up for your newsletter or participating in a survey. Another valuable piece to look for when you read analytics is the bounce rate. The bounce rate refers to when a visitor to your web site leaves a page or your site without clicking to any of your other pages before their session times out. The Internet is a constantly growing and changing environment. Learning to read analytics is an excellent way to make sure your website is meeting your goals and keeping up with everyone around you.
