Living On-Grid Versus Off-Grid Using Your Home Green Energy System

By: Jaime Ratzlaff

So you've been looking into creating your own electricity for your home? That's Great! There are renewable energy sources all around you that you can easily tap into. Whether you are considering this option to save money on your utility bill, or doing your part to reduce your individual use of non-renewable fossil fuels, you will ultimately accomplish both!
There is absolutely no reason for you to completely rely on your local utility company to power your home. With the right knowledge, and just a little bit of skill, you can build your own Green Energy Power Plant! But in planning this out, you must consider the options of tying into the grid, or staying off grid completely.

I Gotta be honest. Living in a suburb of Dallas, and not out in the country (where I'd rather be,) I somewhat enjoy the comfort of staying connected to the grid. There's really not that much wind, and although it is sunny quite a bit, Texas weather is crazy. Unreliable, to be nice. Some months, with my system, I pay nothing to the power company. But not always. I could build a bigger system, I suppose...

When adequate renewable energy resources aren't available for a certain amount of time, and depending of course on the volume of energy storage you have, when that electricity runs out, energy from the power grid will automatically supply your energy needs. Also, if you produce more electricity than you use, your meter will actually run backwards! Yeah, and the Utility Company pays you! Check with your local utility provider about options available.

Using a stand-alone system is most common in remote areas. Personally, someday I hope to purchase some undeveloped lakefront property to build a home on. I will definitely be off-grid! It costs a small fortune to run a power line and completely unnecessary knowing what I know now. So, live in the country? Try to go off-grid! You could build your wind turbine taller, and you most definitely could build a good-sized solar array. In the country, on your own land, the possibilities are almost endless. If you have a home in the country, do yourself a favor and check out my bio link to discover how easy and inexpensive it is to Go Green. Of course you can establish your system completely off-grid even in the city. If you really want to demonstrate a commitment to using as little fossil fuels as possible, right on! You will have to build a larger system, and it will cost a little more, of course, but you can easily get your money back in months with not having an electric bill.

This is America, Land of the Free, so be sure to check your state and community codes before you do anything. Oh my....
