Pay-Per-Lead an Alternative to Pay Per Click

By: Gregg Forscher

No one is interested in seeing their advertising dollars go down the drain and not bring them back anything in return. It is not always easy particularly when the funds are limited. Results are also not always guaranteed although if you have done your homework about the product and service you are trying to sell and surveyed the public to see if it is something they need and want then you have a better chance of success.

There is a type of advertising different than Pay-Per-Click and that is Pay-Per-Lead. Instead of paying each time someone clicks on your ad, you only pay when a qualified lead is created. You do not have to pay if advertising that is ineffective. It is still no guarantee but you have more qualified prospects as your leads should be qualified and someone who is definitely interested in your product or service. There is a higher chance that they will become a buyer of what you have to offer. It is you that has to define what a qualified lead is so that you don’t end up paying for something that you don’t really consider a qualified lead. You need to provide enough details as to what you are looking for.

Either these leads sign an opt-in form with minimally their name and their email address so that you have contact information that is some use to you, or the form may be a bit more detailed to include demographic information, annual income and various interests that the person may have.

As one is only paying for qualified leads, there has been some skull duggery relating to Pay-Per-Lead where the people who signed up as interested may not have been really interested. In other words there have been fraudulent activities of people selling lists to get money which lists are not what they claim to be.

It is recommended that you have a decent auditing system to avoid these fraudulent activities. Being able to record the IP address used in completing the forms is of value and is something you should have in place. You are looking for duplication and can thus avoid these problems. When and if you see many of the forms coming from the same IP address, further investigate it so as to ensure it is legitimate or if not take the necessary actions to stop it. Sometimes these IP addresses are hard to track as they come from a public place such as an airport or a library. Someone could also be trying to make money by filling out the form repeatedly.

On the other hand, proper and legitimate use of a Pay-Per-Lead advertising campaign can be very effective. The correct leads found in this way are longer along the line in terms of being closer to a point where they are ready to buy something you have to offer.
Now your work is to create a large number of sales out of the leads you have from your Pay-Per-Lead campaign.
