Plush Animals - Posable vs. Non-Posable

By: Iveta Volegna

Choosing a gift for someone whose tastes you don't know very well can be incredibly difficult and time-consuming. You could always fall back on the old stand-by of gift cards or cash in an envelope, but what if you want to give something with a more personal meaning?

I recently had this dilemma myself. It was just days before my cousin's birthday party, and my sister and I hadn't gotten him anything yet. We had very little time to find just the right gift, and didn't know much about his preferences. Still, since he was our cousin, we wanted to ensure that we got him something that would be both meaningful and personal. We begin to search the Internet for great ideas, and we quickly noticed stuffed animals. We immediately realized that a plush octopus could make a unique and meaningful gift.

One thing we did know for certain about our cousin was that he was handy around the house, always constructing things and repairing stuff. All of that "handiness," meant that his wife would swear that he had eight arms (pardon the pun) with which to fix things before she even knew that they were broken. As we scoured the web for a suitable stuffed octopus, we found that some of them were "posable." My sister was uncertain as to what made these toys different from a regular stuffed animal, so I proceeded to explain the difference.

You can bend posable stuffed animals and move their limbs into any position you desire. For instance, if you have a stuffed monkey, you could bend his arms so that he hangs off your neck. They are soft and fluffy like regular plush toys, with the added bonus of maneuverability. Traditional, non-posable stuffed animals don't have this same flexibility. The position they are in is the one you are stuck with. Still cuddly and soft, these toys are great for decorating or collecting and displaying, and are the ones most likely to end up in a gift basket. They could hold flowers, a card, or a box of chocolates if they are already in the right position, and because they're not bendable they are sturdier for holding other small gifts.

For our cousin's birthday gift, a posable octopus had more meaning than a traditional one. Its flexibility made it more like our cousin and his busy maneuvers all over the house! The posable octopus could even be positioned holding a few light tools! This is a good example of a gift that's more personal than cash or a gift certificate. Your stuffed animal gift could be posable or traditional, so think carefully over which gift is more appropriate.
