Press Releases Aren't Just For The Big Boys

By: Mike McCoy

We hear about press releases every day in television and radio, but it might not have ever occurred to you that you can use press releases as an effective marketing tool for your online business. No matter what the focus of your company, press releases can work for you.

Once you get the hang of writing them, press releases can be a quick and easy tool you can use to build your internet brand as an expert, gain wider media exposure, and ultimately, bring more traffic and sales to your website.

Follow these basic guidelines and you'll be on your way to press release success in no time!

1) Make sure you're writing in the right format. Check the PR submission sites to see examples of how they want the release formatted, and fill in the blanks accordingly.

2) Talk yourself up! Whereas articles are not the venue to brag about who you are and what you've done, press releases are the perfect forum for tooting your horn. Press releases are the equivalent of telling something about what is going on in your neck of the business world. You can even write a press release announcing that you just released a fantastic article online.

3) Check for errors. Nothing is more unprofessional than a poorly worded or misspelled "press release." You want the words you release to help people take you and your company seriously.

4) Get the word out. Submit your press release to different press release submission sites. Again, make sure you are submitting them in the correct format, or your work will be in vain.

5) Prepare yourself for a reaction. Press releases have the capacity to spread virally throughout the internet, and you never know where your information might land. You may send out dozens and dozens of press releases and only notice an increase in traffic, but always be prepared for the possibility that someone may actually read your release and contact you to ask you questions about what you wrote. You might even get contacted by local and national media to appear on the air as an "expert" in your field.

Don't be afraid to try your hand at this search engine marketing tactic. The idea of creating your own buzz may seem unfamiliar at first, but once you see how well it works, you'll come up with ideas that work even better for your specific niche.
