With the increase in popularity, RSS feeds are now becoming a rather popular sighting on many of your favorite websites. You may or may not be familiar with what it is, what it does, and if it has anything to offer you. Thus, here is a basic run down on the RSS feed and what it might offer you if you are interested. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication which basically means that the information passed through the feed may or may not be directly accessed from the originating website. Joe's website might send a feed they acquired from Fred's site, and vice verse. Some versions of RSS (in this case standing for Rich Site Summary) provide some basic outline information which allows the user to determine whether or not they are interested in hitting the site for the whole thing. Think of it like the teaser ad for television. Depending on the preview, you decide whether you feel like tuning in or not. RSS is a great way to get the latest, up to the minute information on almost any subject available. If you are a news hound, enrolled in additional education, or are trying to find out the American Idol results as they come in, RSS feeds might benefit you. The feeds often eliminate or reduce the need for web surfing, especially if you are a limited surfer and are connected to your interests and needs through the feeds. RSS feeds are designated through subscription services. Most of these are free, although some are starting to charge, depending on the content and the value of the content. Because most of the information is subscribed to and the user has so much input into what comes into their feed, email inboxes are used much less often. This can mean less waiting for information and less wait time for responses. While it is a very effective direct advertising and marketing tool, unsubscribing from and RSS feed is completely hassle feed because all of the control is in the hands of the user. Unlike subscription email services which require unsubscribe links that often don't work or require several trips, RSS feeds can be tuned out immediately. There are many reasons to subscribe to RSS feeds of our choice. Their ease of use is pretty much unparalleled and the information available covers such a wide range of topics that there is something for everyone. Of course, not everyone wants to change the way the internet works and therefore the feeds seems threatening to some people. Once you understand the basics, however, their use seems rather reasonable, even time-saving and convenient. Thus, the future of the RSS feed is pretty clearly a positive one.
