Water is one of the most long-term destructive substances in a house. It can easily dissolve or weaken wooden or soft materials supporting the growth of microorganisms on others. Since water has a natural force and flows it is able to carry with it a wide variety of pathogens and allergens harmful to humans. Hence sewage damage is one of the commonest problems faced by people all over the world. Sewage damage poses a very dangerous threat to human health. However, the severity of the health threat depends on the amount and kind of the sewage and the degree and extent of spread into the building environment. The degree of penetration depends upon the properties of the contaminated materials, the quantity of sewage, and the amount of time the sewage remains in contact with materials. When a house is affected by sewage damage, up from the septic lines, or flooding of a building is damaged by a heavy load of organic matter, as in the case of river flooding, a serious threat to human health exists. Without proper action, widespread damage to the households will occur right away. Several days will pass before the problem can be determined. The time lapse allows extensive permeation and contamination of absorbent materials such as wood, gypsum, paper, and concrete to occur. This absorption leads to the growth of potential diseases. Issues of Concern Associated with the sewage damage problem There are several factors that determine the remediation of the problem. These are the nature of the contamination, the types of water-damaged materials, the sewage micro flora, organic matter load, volume of water, and impact of the outdoor temperature and humidity of the indoor environment. The routes of exposure of the building occupants to the micro-organisms are contact, ingestion, and inhalation. An improper job of cleaning and disinfection may leave a substrate for disease-causing microorganisms. Occupants may be infected by careless transmission of diseases from hands to mouth, or by inhalation of air bourne microbes. Microbial contaminants can also pass to other areas through foot. Another aspect of sewage damage backflow or flooding is that this condition is conducive to the growth of non-sewage microorganisms. The wetness, humidity, and organic matter act as a breeding ground for other microbes. People with weak immune system or aged people who are susceptible to diseases and illness should be careful. The factors to be considered, as a remedy from sewage damage comprises of the types of materials affected, assessment of the degree of damage, the extent of contaminated absorbent material, the total contact time, the humidity, and the amount of ventilation available. The primary goal of sewage damage cleanup must be the absolute removal and disposal of water and contamination utilizing the sanitary sewer system if possible. Wet extraction systems should be also used to remove sewage damage in entirety. While the cleaning process is going on it is necessary to remove the materials which are vulnerable to the sewage damage. These items can comprise of carpets, wall covering porous wallboard, and insulation, and other substrates with the potential for mold growth.
