When it comes to home decoration, the kitchen holds a special place. In many respects, the kitchen is the center of the home. It's where we meet and hang out, cook, wash dishes, nuke stuff in the microwave, and stop by to grab a quick snack from the fridge or stick notes on it. The kitchen is a bright, warm, friendly place and white seems the perfect color for it. White kitchen cabinets, a white fridge, white countertops, white tile-they make for a crisp, clean look that just never goes out of style. Why white? I just like the bright, clean look. You can never have enough light in a kitchen, and having everything white makes it so much easier to get that open, inviting look. When I switched to all white kitchen cabinets and décor a couple of years ago I found that my kitchen was a lot brighter even though my kitchen lighting had stayed the same. I found I could actually save electricity by leaving a couple of lights off and still get the same level of brightness as I'd had before with my brown kitchen color scheme. One of the questions people ask me about white cabinets and surfaces is whether they require a lot more maintenance than darker colors. That's a legitimate question. Kitchens need to look clean at all times. While an all white décor looks terrific, it also needs to be kept meticulously clean as every bit of dirt shows. Also, the white paint used on kitchen cabinets in the past didn't hold up too well and required a lot of attention and maintenance. Colors didn't hold up so well either, and sometimes things began looking mismatched. Well, that was then, and this is now. Materials have changed and upkeep of a gleaming white kitchen is no longer as time-consuming as it once was. The secret is the new materials used. The introduction of thermo foil made a huge difference. Thermo foil refers to a process where a thin layer of rigid vinyl is heat-fused to doors, drawers and other surfaces. This creates a super-smooth surface with totally uniform color and texture that is also substantially more durable than paint. Thermo foil cabinets and surfaces can be cleaned very easily and they are more resistant to getting nicked and scratched than paint. In essence, thermo foil provides all the advantages of high quality paint without any of paint's disadvantages. Another material that makes gleaming white kitchens possible at affordable prices is melamine, or rather melamine resin. This is a synthetic polymer material that's fire resistant, heat tolerant, and has a smooth, uniform color and texture. Not everyone likes the look of melamine cabinets, but they certainly have that modern Euro-style look. They are also quite affordable, and very easy to clean. Whatever surface material you choose, it's likely available in many styles and price ranges all the way from budget to top-of-the-line. Always make sure to deal with a knowledgeable, reputable company and don't skimp on substrate to which the finishing materials are bonded. They determine the overall quality and durability of your shiny new white kitchen cabinets.
